Your teen will experience emotional highs and lows, and they’re completely normal. Their brains (and bodies) are developing, which affects their feelings. In fact, their emotional development is tied to their physical development, and teens who are progressing faster or slower than their peers may have big feelings about it. This is the age when teens begin expressing their sexuality and get interested in romantic relationships. They have a deep need for privacy combined with the need for independence, so may appear distant. All of this is normal but trust your instincts and get professional help when needed.
