Recognize Warning Signs

If your child is trying to get attention by bringing up suicide, give them attention. If they talk about, threaten, or even joke about suicide, take it seriously. If they romanticize death, don’t ignore it. If you’re ever on the fence about getting professional help, get help. This is something every parent needs to internalize, but we also need to teach it to our teens in case a friend talks about suicide with their peers instead of their parents. We have resources on our site from warning signs to helplines—bookmark them.
