Addiction Is Never Planned

Addiction is never planned. No teen wakes up and says, “I’d like to become addicted to drugs.” Understanding that is crucial because it means any teen is at risk for substance abuse, especially when alcohol or drugs is presented as a rite of passage (which they’re not). One of your roles as a parent is to tackle the problem with prevention. Be a parent who listens, gives guidance, and provides ideas for healthy stress management. Most important: trust your instincts.  Seeking professional help is an act of strength if you suspect your teen may be headed towards trouble.
